Abdulaziz the 32nd Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, reigning from June 25, 1861 (after the death of his brother Abdulmejid I) until May 30, 1876. Abdulaziz granted rights to Christian millet to establish an assembly, such as the Armenian Assembly established in 1863, established the first stock exchange in Istanbul in 1866, and granted even citizenship to all residents of the state in 1869. In foreign relations Abdulaziz established good relations with Britain and France. He was the first sultan to visit Western Europe, and during his visit to England, Queen Victoria awarded him the Order of the Garter. Abdulaziz invested large sums of money in renewing and expanding the Ottoman navy, which at the end of his reign was the third largest navy in the world.
