A special greeting in the form of a poem to Rabbi Avraham Zeligman, who was awarded the title of "Chaver", signed by Rabbi Yosef Zvi Carlebach of Hamburg. Tevet 7, 1939.
Rabbi Dr. Yosef Zvi Carlebach [1883-1942], rabbi of Hamburg, and activist for yeshivas in Europe. A disciple of Rabbi Yaakov Ettlinger of Altona. He also served as the Rabbi of Liebeck after the First World War. At the outbreak of World War II, though he could have been saved, he preferred to stay with his community. In 1941 he published an article in the Jewish newspapers, in which he expressed his wish for peace and his opposition to the war. The article was handed over to one of the SS commanders and he immediately sent a report to Berlin so that they would punish the writer. However, due to his high status, the Nazis did not arrest him in his city but cheated him out with his wife, his four young children, and thousands of other Jews on a long journey that ended in Riga, Latvia. For about four months he stayed in Riga with thousands of Jews in the Jungfernhof concentration camp, where they perished on March 26, 1942.
