An early Essay on the Bible. On the protective page is a beautiful dedication in the handwriting and signature of the father of the Hebrew Enlightenment movement, Moshe Mendelssohn, to the fellow Israel Yaakov son of Rabbi Yitzchak. Tevet 9, 1746.

Moshe Mendelssohn [Mendelssohn 1729-1786] a German-Jewish philosopher, one of the fathers of the Jewish Enlightenment movement. The figure that most represents the beginning of the modern era in the history of European Jewry. On his mother's side he was a descendant of the Ram'a. His father was a sofer st'm, and he was educated in traditional Jewish education, which included Torah study and Talmud with their commentaries. As a young boy, Mendelssohn was recognized as a multi-talented prodigy. On the general German level, Mendelssohn was involved in the contemporary German Enlightenment discourse, and published books and articles that were highly appreciation and circulated. On the Jewish level, he published the first modern Hebrew periodical "kohelet musar", published a German translation and an annotation of five Torah Pentateuchs, and gathered around him a circle of students and Followers, from whom the Jewish Enlightenment movement arose. Mendelssohn has since been perceived as the the father of the Enlightenment movement, and his character has centered around it the positive and negative attitude towards this movement and its ideas.
