Flag of the Gaza Coast Regional Council with the council symbol and the names of the 16 communities along the coast of the Gaza Strip, which were evacuated as part of the "Disengagement" Plan in the summer of 2005.
The Gaza Strip Regional Council existed in the southern coastal area between the Ashkelon Coast Regional Council and the Israel-Egypt border (in the Philadelphi Corridor area) and included the Jewish settlements established in the areas of the Gaza Strip. The council was established in May 1979 by order of the Gaza Strip Area Commander of the IDF. At its peak (before the evacuation), the council included 8,900 residents in 22 communities. The council offices were located in Neve Dekalim, the largest community in Gush Katif and the entire council, where the regional community center also operated. Most residents worked in agriculture, industry and education. The last council head was Avner Shimoni, who served in his position until the council was dissolved in the summer of 2005. The disengagement plan was carried out by Israel in the summer of 2005 and included the evacuation of the settlements and IDF forces in the Gaza Strip to the exact lines of the Green Line and the transfer of control over the entire Strip to the Palestinian Authority, along with the evacuation of four isolated settlements and IDF roadblocks in northern Samaria. The plan was initiated and led by the thirtieth Prime Minister of Israel, Ariel Sharon, in an act that brought one of the most difficult periods in Israel's history with the takeover of Gaza by the terrorist organization Hamas, its establishment in the abandoned communities, its armament, and its launching of the October 7 murder campaign.
