Moritz Oppenheim ERINNERUNGEN - Memories. Published by Alfred Oppenheim, Frankfurt am Main 1924. only edition. Very rare publication. German.

A rare and early publication in which Moritz Oppenheim describes his childhood memories and the environmental influences that made him an artist and illustrator of Jewish life. The 'memories' open with the fact that he does not know his exact birthday according to the Hebrew calendar, and that according to family tradition he was born the day after fast 10 B'Tevet. Oppenheim describes in great detail his memories as a child - his mother's clothes, the majesty and splendor that accompanied the housewares on Passover, as well as his first day at school - it was a Talmud Torah room rented from a poor woman for whom every child had to bring a log of firewood every day of the winter, and a candle once a week in the summer. One day a boy who had previously studied at the Academy of Painting came to school, and when he arrived at the school where Oppenheim studied he carried his painting bag with him wherever he went. Influenced by him as a teenager, Oppenheim's curiosity for the art of painting sometimes began, and from here began his life as an artist. Oppenheim tells about the day he decided his future in the field of painting, the artists who influenced him and charted his path, the first portraits he painted, his travels in European cities, Until he became famous for his phenomenal talent, and became one of the greatest Jewish artists of his generation known as "the first Jewish painter of the modern age." The book is accompanied by pictures of his great works on the subject of Jewish portraits, and Jewish customs. On the page before the title page is a portrait of Oppenheim himself.
