On the eve of World War II, the annexation of Austria to Germany and the destruction of most of the Jewish community by the Nazi porter, dozens of synagogues were scattered throughout Vienna. At the end of the war, only two survived: the magnificent Great Synagogue and the synagogue in Judenplatz Square, erected on the remains of the ancient synagogue.
