The important edition of the Tanya published in Vilna in 1909, in which the printers widow and the Ram brothers announced the abolition of the right to print the book, and the granting of the rights to Rabbi Shalom Dovber of Lubavitch for the benefit of the "Tomchey Tmimim" Institution: "We have now sold this right to the Rebbe Shalom Dovber Shlit'a of Lubavitch ... and from now on we are not allowed to print the Book of the Tanya, neither nor in our power, until the end of the world" (page II).

In 1795, copying of the Tanya began. Due to deliberate forgeries of the Tanya, Rabbi Shneur Zalman decided to print it only in official printing and to ban its copying for five years. In 1796, the Tanya was first printed in a printing house in Slavita. The book has since been printed dozens of times, based on a copy of this print.
The Thirty-Sixth Edition of the Widow and the Ram Brothers' printing house was printed in Vilna in 1900. In this printing, all parts of the book were proofread according to original manuscripts and corrected by errors in previous editions. The owners of the printing house sold in 1909 the exclusive printing right of the revised edition to the Rasha"b Rebbe, for the benefit of Yeshivat "Tomchey Tmimim" [the edition before us]. From now on, as instructed by the Rayat'z Rebbe, all prints of the book are photocopies of this edition.
In 1942, the official publishing house of the Chabad Chassidim was founded under the name KHT, and the printing right was transferred to KHT, by its founder, the Rebbe of the Rayat'z.
