Thomas Shaw - Travels, or Observations Relating to Several Parts of Barbary and the Levant - Oxford 1738. First edition..

An important travel book which is considered to be the most reliable description of the period of the countries of the East and North Africa. The author has visited Egypt, Sinai, Palestine, Cyprus, and most of North Africa, including parts of Lebanon, Tunisia, and Algeria. The book includes 33 engravings - a portrait of the author and 32 additional engravings (printed on 29 plates), including maps (some of which are folded), illustrations of plants, animals, and more. On page 357, there is a map of the Land of Israel (the names of the places are printed in Hebrew and English), according to the map of Rabbi Elia Mizrahi. The book is bound with: "A supplement to a book entitled travels or observations & c., By Thomas Shaw. Oxford, 1746. Supplement to Shaw's book, published by Shaw following a review by Richard Pocock. The supplement includes two folded engraving plates. One The tablets depict the mosaic found in the city of plastrina (Italy) and depict the various peoples and animals living along the Nile.

Gilt leaf cutting. The page of the author's portrait at the beginning of the book is cropped and missing the edge, and only the portrait itself appears. Original leather binding with decorations, and gilt inscription on spine. Good - very good condition.
