Two important letters in the handwriting and signature of Rabbi Avraham David Shalem, the Chief Rabbi of the Sephardic community of lima in Peru. The letters were written in the early 1950s when he began serving as rabbi of the community.
When Rabbi Avraham David Shalem arrived in Peru, he found a Jewish community in a bad spiritual condition. "When I arrived, I found an entire community that had been abandoned and moved away from the laws of our holy Torah", he writes. One of the difficult questions he encountered was whether make a circumcision to sons born from a mixed marriage of Israelis who married foreigners. In a letter sent to the Chief Rabbi of Uruguay, Rabbi Aharon Milevsky in Shvat 19, 1951, the Gaon detailsWrites his doubt.
In his second letter dated 6 Adar 1951, which was also sent to Rabbi Aharon Milevsky, he thanked him for his many blessings on the occasion of his new appointment.
Rabbi Avraham Shalem [1928-2014]: Chief Rabbi of Peru, Seattle, Washington and the Capital Mexico, Director of the Or HaMizrach Institute for the Publication of Rare Manuscripts by the sfardic Sages, Director of the Sephardic Orphanage in Jerusalem and Operators of the Sephardic Community Committee in the City. In 1950 sent on a mission in Peru to save the Jewish community there, by Rabbi Uziel who saw it as a sacred mission and also due to the fact that Rabbi Avraham Shalem spoke Ladino. While in Peru, he helped organize Jewish life, Jewish education, family purity, the establishment of mikvahs, and kiddushin.
