24 photographs documenting the activities of Hebrew training groups in Tartu (Estonia), some of which are depicted on the back in Hebrew. 1930s.

Group and individual photographs depicting the Jews of Tartu in pioneering activities prior to their immigration to Eretz Israel: agricultural work, studies, social events, and rare photographs of youths leaving Tartu on their way to Eretz Israel by train.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the city of Tartu had about 2,000 Jews out of about 42,000 inhabitants. The community owned a Jewish school and the University of Tartu was a kind of Jewish student union. According to a census conducted in the 1930s, there were only 920 Jews living in Tartu. Until the city was occupied by Nazi Germany in July 1942 as part of Operation Barbarossa the vast majority of Jews managed to escape with the exception of a few dozen, mostly the elderly and the sick. After the occupation, they were transferred to the Tartu concentration camp, and soon after, they were killed.
