By order of Queen Elizabeth II, Churchill's coffin was placed for three days in Westminster Abbey to allow the people to pass by. Israeli President Zalman Shazar and former Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion arrived from Israel. It was the largest gathering of heads of state until the funeral of Pope John Paul II in 2005. The funeral was attended by many leaders from around the world, including Charles de Gaulle.
