alter kacyzne [Katzizna; 1885-1941] was born in Vilnius (Vilna) and was educated in Hyder in his youth. An important Jewish photographer who captured in his photographs Jewish life in Poland in the 1920s and 1930s. During almost his entire stay in Warsaw, until the family fled in 1939, Katzizana ran a thriving photography studio in the city (he was also a writer, poet, playwright, publisher). Produced many portraits, and used to take the camera with him everywhere - even When he was traveling for lectures that led him to the remote ends of Poland - his camera was his constant companion; During his life, a rich collection of photographs accumulated in his possession, documenting the daily lives of members of all avenues of Jewish society in Poland. Katzizna's valuable historical collection was completely destroyed during the Nazi occupation - Except from some 700 photographs that have been saved, which had previously been sent by him to the United States. While Ternopil was already under Nazi occupation, Katzizna was beaten to death in the city's Jewish cemetery on July 7, 1941 in a pogrom carried out by Ukrainian collaborators, during which some 5,000 Jews were beaten to death. He was 56 at the time of his death.
