An American Ketubah designed by Sol Nodel (1912-1976). Impressive design. BURMOND CO. PRINTING. New York 1942.

Written for the marriage of the groom Reuben Ben Dov with the bride Miriam Bat Haim Yehuda, United States 1950.

The Ketubah is divided into two main parts: At the top appears a calligraphic caption of the phrase "מהרה ה' אלוהינו ישמע בהרי יהודה ובחוצות ירושלים קול ששון וקול שמחה קול חתן וקול כלה" in Hebrew and English. Underneath is a groom and bride's painting surrounded by various historical Jewish figures: Jewish armor-clad warriors strike with trumpets, elders, and desecrated young women with cymbals.

The bottom part - the title is "Ketubah" and text written in two languages. On the right is the Aramaic text and on the left the English translation. At the bottom of the Aramaic text is a room for filling the two witnesses' signature, in English, a place for filling the groom's signatures, the bride's witnesses and the rabbi.
The English wording is radically different, adding not only the husband's duties to his wife but the wife's obligations to her husband and her family. At the bottom of the inscription is another geometric decoration, centered on a medallion with a canopy covering a hill from which lines of light rise upwards. Bottom right signed artist Sol nodel and the printer name - Art Certificate Co, New York.

Size: 36x26 cm. A few stains in the casing, good condition.
