The reasons of the laws of Moses. From the More Nevochim of Maimonides / [Translated] by James Townley. With notes, dissertations, and a life of the author. By James Townley. London 1827. Rare.
An early book on the Rambam's reasons of the mitzvot as explained by the Rambam in the third part of the 'More Nevochim', with a long introduction about the Rambam, his life, and his writings. The author discusses, among other things, the Rambam's 'historical' reason for prohibition of idolatry, which the Ramba"m explains as a departure from the form of worship of the ancient foreign idolatry at the time of the Bible. On the page next to the title page is an engraving of a tefillin, a mezuzah, an amulet, and a Jew with a tefillin.
