A large and impressive Chanukah Menorah with an eagle figure on its head - silver. Poland, 19th century.

Foot base in leaf and flower patterns.

The crowned eagle is a symbol of Polish, Austrian, German, and Russian rule. These eagles appear a lot on objects of Jewish art intended for both home and synagogue. The eagle symbol that appears between the decorations or separately as a gesture of gratitude, or as proof of loyalty to the government. In the synagogues in these areas it was customary to place this lamp next to the ark.

Provenance: The estate of the rabbi, researcher and author Moshe Hershler [1922-1991].

Height: 63 cm. Length: 47 cm. Base diameter: 19 cm. Weight: 1.26 kg.
