DER AEL TESTE DER JUDEN IN LITZMANNSTADT - Brot Karte - Bread card number 176097 with a table of numbers entitling to receive a daily ration of bread in the Lodz ghetto for a period of 60 days. The card belonged to a Jew living in the ghetto, named Aaron Zeliger, born in 1902 who lived in 22 Dworska Street (this street housed the ghetto administration's offices, and several other important buildings). The details were filled in on: 4/6/1941. And was actually used only 16 times. At the top of the card is an ink stamp - "Gestorben" - "Died".

Below the lines with the cardholder's details are instructions in German on how to exercise the right to receive bread and the the expected penalties for those who do not comply with the regulations.

Unlike other ghettos where food and basic goods were smuggled in from outside the ghetto; in Lodz, the German authorities were so strict that it was virtually impossible to smuggle anything in. The Jews were completely dependent on the German authorities and Judenrat for food, medicine and any other vital goods. Hunger and disease were rampant. About 164,000 people were forced to live together in 4 square kilometers, of which only 2.4 kilometers were appropriate for residential use. The ghetto was liquidated by the Nazis in 1944.

Size: 17x14 cm.Good condition.
