Five long letters in the handwriting and signature of the Jewish philosopher Moritz Lazarus. The letters deal with various matters - the publication of his books, responses to the speeches he gave, his thoughts, and more. Three of them were written on official Lazarus stationery, one on a postcard, and another a four-page letter on regular paper. Leipzig and other places, 19th century.

Moritz (Moshe) Lazarus [1824-1903] Jewish-German philosopher, ethnologist and psychologist, founder of national psychology and comparative psychology. Lazarus developed a groundbreaking philosophical method that examines human qualities as part of a society, not as an individual. He was considered one of the members of the Jewish elite of his time in Germany, and took an important part in the public and spiritual life of Prussian Jewry. Between the years 1867-1892 he was a member of the Assembly of Deputies (Repräsentanten-Versammlung) of the Jewish community in Berlin, and in the years 1882-1894 vice-president of the Alliance of German-Jewish Communities (Deutsch-Israelitischer Gemeindebund), and held many other positions. His personal archive is kept in the National Library.
