On the right is a Menorah, on the left a Star of David, and at the bottom the year: 1941 (the year in which the ghetto was established). There is an engraving of a barbed wire on all four corners.
The map depicts the Krakow Ghetto established by the Germans during World War II in the Podgórze quarter in the southern suburbs of the city of Krakow (not the older 'Judenstadt' of Krakow).
The Krakow Ghetto was established in March 1941, and by mid-March, 15,000 Jews were crammed into an area previously inhabited by 3,000 people, which included 30 streets, 320 residential buildings, and 3,167 rooms. As a result, one apartment was allocated to every four Jewish families, and many lived in the streets. The ghetto was surrounded by a wall that was built shortly before and separated it from the rest of the city. The ghetto operated as a closed and restricted area for two years - from its establishment in March 1941 until its final destruction in March 1943, with the last transport of Jews sent to the extermination camps in Belzec and Auschwitz.
