L'Affaire Dreyfus L'Image - 266 CARICATURS FRANCAISES ET ETRANGERES - - The Dreyfus affair in pictures - 266 cartoons published in France and abroad during the Dreyfus affair in the years 1885-1898, by JOHN GRAND0CARTERET, published by ERNEST FLAMMARION, Paris [1899].

One of the earliest publications that contains a rare selection of cartoons against Dreyfus and his supporters (many of which are unknown, and do not appear in the literature dealing with the reflection of the affair in the written media), made by various illustrators over the years from Dreyfus' accusation of treason to his final acquittal. The author accuses the French press of taking a clear stance against Dreyfus throughout the affair, and of presenting the facts in a manipulative manner which puts Dreyfus and his supporters in a negative light. In his long introduction he explains how the position of the French press has affected the results of the trial in its various stages, and appeals to the whole of French society to make Introspection as to its conduct during the years in which the affair took place. Throughout the book alongside the hundreds of cartoons the author explains the manipulation of the editors and cartoonists themselves, the ridiculous way in which they each portrayed them, and the latent or overt interest behind presenting Dreyfus as a criminal whose guilt is known and predetermined. The author also points to various articles published in the French press and reported complete lies about the court's alleged conduct against Dreyfus, while at the time the court was already inclined to accept his appeal, towards acquittal, and shows how this biased anti-Dreyfus approach directly or indirectly affected Also about the press that was supposed to be 'neutral', which covered the affair outside of France, in Italy, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Belgium and other countries, while analyzing the cartoons that were also published in the major newspapers in these and other countries.

A rare and early publication about the influence of the antisemitic press on the jewish affair that agitated the whole of Europe in the late 19th century.
