There was great rivalry between Johnson and Larry Bird on the courts. The two met at the finals of the college championships in 1979, and from then on the rivalry continued over the years as each led his team time and again to compete in the NBA finals. Johnson asserted that for him, the season consists of 80 regular games and two more meetings between the Lakers and Boston, while Bird testified that Johnson's statistical achievements were "the first thing he checked in the morning". The rivalry between the two is considered so significant because it represented many differences - the rivalry between the Lakers and Boston as clubs; the "showtime" style of the Lakers compared to Boston's physical "dirty work" style; and the black basketball players vs. the white. Despite their rivalry on the courts, the two testified that outside the court they were good friends As reflected in the photo before us.
