A very early local kosher certificate in the handwriting and signature of Rabbi Yauda Leon - Rabbi of Rome. Italian. 1801. Extremely rare.
The Gaon Rabbi Yehuda Leon one of the sages of Eretz Israel who came to Rome and strengthened the religion. In 1794 he printed in Livorno the book of Rabbi Yom Tov Algazi, a commentary on "Halachot Bechorot Ve Challah" by Ramba'n. Upon arriving in Rome, he took the place of Rabbi Shlomo Amron (who died in 1795) as the chief rabbi of Rome, and sat on the rabbinical chair for 28 years. Rabbi Mordechai Shmuel Girondi wrote about him on behalf of Rabbi Yitzchak Raphael Finzi "He found in the rabbi ten hands in the wisdom of the Talmud and the poskim." He died on the 2nd of Adar II, 1824, and it is known about the poet Hillel Di La Tori lamented on his death.
