AVIS AUX ITALIENS – Message to the Italians on behalf of the French Republic, the Presidency of the Council, the National Ministry of Defense and War, the Ministry of the Interior. A large poster calling on Italians living in the commune of Montclar in France to declare loyalty to France, and to pledge to make themselves available to the civil and military authorities in France. June 11, 1940. French.

“All Italian men, over the age of 17 and up to the age of 60, currently residing in the territory of the Department of the South, Commune of Montclar are officially invited to appear on Friday, June 14, 1940, at 9 a.m. to provide all their identity documents before the Census Commission that will sit in the Palais de Justice. They will be required to declare if they intend to sign a declaration of loyalty to France and if they are willing to place themselves at the disposal of the French civil and military authorities. Failure to appear will result in the application of the most severe administrative measures. Done in Valencia, June 11, 1940. President of the Council, Minister of Defense National and War, the Minister of the Interior and by order of the President of Drome Marcel Lanquetin.”

Montclar was an area in the south of France that bordered the Italian border to the east and many Italian residents lived there. At the beginning of the war, Italian citizens were required to declare loyalty and commitment to France, the country in which they lived.
