In the 1930s Oskar Schindler (1908-1974) owned a number of German companies as he frequently changed his source of income. Following the Great Depression, he even went bankrupt. At the outbreak of World War II and the occupation of Poland by the Germans in September 1939, Schindler moved to Krakow, in search of business opportunities. In October, he took over an enamel manufacturing factory in Zablocie, near Krakow, where he employed about 1200 Jewish workers during the war years, whom he saved from death. Another act of rescue by Schindler and his wife was their acceptance as laborers of over 100 Jews who were sent by freight train from the Golleschau camp, near Auschwitz. The Jews arrived in closed wagons in January 1945, after a journey of several weeks, at the Svitavy railway station. Because of their poor physical condition, other factories refused to accept them. To get them into his factory, Schindler bribed the manager of the train station. They were accepted for work even though they suffered from hunger and their meager strength was not enough for them to be used as laborers. In this process Schindler saved them from certain destruction. Oskar Schindler is the most well-known Righteous Among the Nations and associated with the rescue of the Jews in the years of the Holocaust with countless books written about him, and film publications about the story of his rescue of the Jews in the Holocaust. In 1962, during his visit to Israel, Yitzhak Stern said of him: "Brother, in the Hebrew language there are three expressions, three levels: Adam, Ish, Enosh. I think another level is needed: "Schindler".
