Passover Haggadah with English translation by Cecil Roth. Illustrations by DONIA NACHSHEN. Hebrew and English column by column. London 1934, SONCINO printing.

An interesting Haggadah with illustrations characterized by traditional figures alongside contemporary figures of the 'new Jew'. The illustrations for the Haggadah were made in purple and yellow, with those accompanying the traditional text characterized by figures in traditional dress, with all the 'religious' characteristics, a long robe, peot, and so on. In texts that talk about 'LeShana Haba'ah' and the future, the illustrator paints the figures in the form of the pioneering Jew without a cupola. This is well expressed in the opening figure of the Haggadah, which shows at the bottom traditional figures that characterize those who left Egypt, and as they ascend and approach the Land of Israel, the figures take shape, the long robe is replaced by shorts, and the cupola removed from the head. Similarly, in the illustration depicting "Next Year in Jerusalem" the illustrator chose to paint contemporary figures that are more reminiscent of the pioneering 20th-century Jew.
