LA TERRE SAINTE JERUSALEM ET LE NORD DE LA JUDEE - HOLY LAND JERUSALEM AND NORTHERN JUDEA by Victor Guerin. Published by E.PLON, NOURRIT Paris 1897 - the original French edition. Accompanied by 147 illustrations of Jerusalem and its surroundings, created by Victor Guerin himself.

The author's travels in Jerusalem and its surroundings and Northern Judea. The book is accompanied by many illustrations, some within the text and some full page, of important sites and people in Jerusalem and its surroundings: the Western Wall, Yad Absalom, the entrances and gates to the Old City, traders in their traditional clothes, Rachel's Tomb and more. Before us is the original French edition, the book was translated to several languages including English, German and Spanish.

The author, Victor Guérin (1821-1891) - a French researcher, visited Eretz Israel eight times starting in 1852. He was awarded the prize of the French Academy of Sciences for his book "Holy Land - Its History and Memoirs" published in 1881-1883. Unlike researchers of his time who visited Eretz Israel, Guerin cites extensively from Hebrew sources such as the Bible, Mishnah and Talmud and also from writings of Jewish travelers such as Rabbi Isaac Chelo and Benjamin of Tudela. Guerin's travel diaries precisely note the times of visits to each site and directions of travel. The research works of the Hebrew researchers Benjamin Mazar and Yehoshua Ben-Arie often rely on the findings of Guerin's research.
