Three press photographs of illegal immigrant ships to Israel - Exodus and Haganah.
* The famous Exodus ship. The large sign can be seen: 'HAGANAH EXODUS 1942' - five years before the famous voyage in 1947 in which the passengers were deported to the detention camps in Germany after a bitter struggle. The photograph before us was taken at a time when the ship was being purchased by the United States Government's Shipping Administration. Size: 18x12 cm.
* Illegal immigrant ship "JEWISH STATE" arriving at the port of Haifa. The ship bears the sign: "The Haganah jewish state", Hebrew and English. This ship sailed on September 26, 1947 from the port of Burgas in Bulgaria, with 2,664 illegal immigrants on board. In the "Jewish State" extensive preparations were made for the expected confrontation with the British. The ship's decks were fortified with barbed wire, concentration places were prepared with "weapons", such as stones, screws, metal parts and boxes, and a 400-strong force was equipped with sticks. The ship arrived in Israel on October 2 and headed for the port of Tel Aviv, accompanied by four British destroyers. A few hours later, the British called on the "Jewish state" to stop, and when they did not respond, two tear gas bombers rained down on it. Then, one of the destroyers hit the illegal immigrant ship and a British takeover team captured it despite the resistance. The ship was towed to the port of Haifa and put into it the next day [at this point the photo before of us was taken]. The illegal immigrants waited in the port for three days until they were transferred on deportation ships to the Dahkaliya detention camp in Cyprus. 18x13 cm.
