Twelve Portraits by William Rothenstein - Twelve Portraits by William Rothenstein, issued by Faber and Faber, London 1929 - First Edition. Signed copy by the portraitist featured in the book - William Rothenstein.

Twelve drawings created in the two years preceding the book's publication (all signed and dated in the plate), led by a portrait of Albert Einstein. Portraits: John Galsworthy, Ramsay Macdonald, Albert Einstein, Philip Wilson Steer, T. S. Eliot, Walter De La Mare, George Bernard Shaw, Lord Melchett, Stanley Baldwin, Max Beerbohm, Gerhardt Hauptmann, A. S. Eddington.

Despite Rothenstein's attempt to portray Einstein's power and intelligence in his depiction of him, Einstein himself was not entirely satisfied with the portrait. He felt it was "too serious" and said that in the portrait he looked older. Despite that, the portrait remained a famous image of Einstein, capturing Rothenstein's ability to seize not only physical attributes but also the inner essence of his subjects.

[16] p. 38 cm. Slight stains on cover. Each portrait spans a full 38x24 cm page, protected by parchment paper on which its name is printed.
