In the first years of World War II, the conditions of the Hungarian Jews was better than the Jews in the German occupation territories. On March 19, 1944, the German army invaded Hungary. The Jews were immediately marked with a yellow patch, their property was confiscated, and steps were taken to separate them from the general population in order to exterminate them. The Jews were ordered to move to the ghettos that were established in all the cities of Hungary. By the middle of May 1944, about half a million Jews from the field cities in Hungary were concentrated in ghettos. The concentration of the Jews of Budapest was postponed to the last stage. Hungarian Jews were exterminated at an unprecedented record speed as part of the most brutal extermination program of the war. In just a few weeks, about 450,000 Jews were deported to Auschwitz. When the deportations ended, in July 1944, there were no more Jews in Hungary outside of Budapest. At the stage when the majority of Hungarian Jewry was exterminated in Auschwitz, about one hundred and fifty thousand Jews remained in Budapest among the living. Of these, approximately 100,000 Jews survived.
