The Sachsenhausen concentration camp was the main concentration camp for the Berlin area during the Nazi regime. It was established in the Sachsenhausen district of the city of Oranienburg, a northern suburb of Berlin, as one of three concentration camps set up at the time in Germany for opponents of the Nazi regime (along with Dachau and Buchenwald). From April to June 1941 SS physician Dr. Friedrich conducted a selection to the camp inmates, sorting out dead and sick inmates as part of an operation to expand the T4 - Authentication program and apply it to camp inmates who were too weak to work. The prisoners sorted to death were transferred to Sonnenstein, a center where physically and mentally disabled people were systematically gassed by SS doctors. The camp operated as a Nazi concentration camp between 1936 and 1945, and it is estimated that close to one hundred thousand people were killed in the camp out of about two hundred thousand prisoners imprisoned there.
