Yizkor Israel the victims of "Patria". Remember his immigrant sons and daughters who paid with their lives for their desire to find refuge in the homeland and who bought in their death the right for their thousands of brethren to ascend to the shores of the land ... "
Patria (Latin:'homeland') was a British deportation ship loaded with illegal immigrants from three ships captured in November 1940 near the coast of Eretz Israel, with the aim of deporting them to Mauritius. In order to delay the deportation, the Haganah planted a bomb on the ship while it was moored in the port of Haifa, in order to cause it minor damage. But the damage was bigger than planned, and the ship sank on November 25, 1940, on more than 208 illegal immigrants on board (the exact number is unknown, but it is estimated that there were about 250) and 2 British policemen.
