Free train ticket - Paris under Nazi occupation. The ticket reads: "Train pass number 301160, entitled to enter the train facilities, and to patrol the streets at night, valid with ID card 14846 - the main direction of traffic of Paris" and the symbol of the Nazi occupier, an eagle and a swastika. Paris c. 1940. Rare.

France surrendered to Germany on the Maginot Line and signed an armistice with Germany on June 22, 1940. About a month later, the MPs decided to abolish the regime of the Republic of France, grant full powers to Marshal Henry Pétain and make him the "head of state of France". France was divided, according to the armistice agreement, into five parts: a limited area on the northeastern border annexed to the Belgian military government, a southeastern area ceded to Italian control, and Alsace and Lorraine annexed to Germany. The remaining two areas included most of France and were divided between France and Germany: the occupied zone, which was under German control, included the western, northern and eastern regions, including Paris. With Hitler's rise to power, thousands of Jewish refugees from the Reich emigrated to France and settled mainly in Paris, and on the eve of World War II, two-thirds of all French Jews lived in Paris.
