The French capital has been ruled by Nazi Germany since the armistice agreement with France in June 1940, while establishing the puppet regime that established its capital in the spa town of Vichy. As the United States Third Army approached under the command of George Patton, an uprising of the French underground against the German garrison in Paris began. On 24 and 25 August, members of the French Interior Forces (FFI) of the Resistance received backing from the Free French Army and the uprising turned into urban fighting, with the help of barricades, machine guns, French militia snipers and tanks, firing at the Nazi forces, until their surrender. The 'Battle of Paris' took place in August 1944, and ended with the surrender of the occupying German garrison on the 25th of the month.

The battle marked the end of Operation Oberlord - the liberation of France by the Allies, the restoration of the French Republic and the exile of members of the Vichy government to Sigmaringen in Germany, and was one of the signs that marked the end of World War II.
