An important letter signed by the Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of Eretz Yisrael - Rabbi Yitzchak Isaac Halevi Herzog to the Constantinople, regarding the Chief Rabbinate's initiative in France and Britain to declare a fast for all Israel all over the world "to warn for the trouble of our people" at the outbreak of the Holocaust. Av 20, 1938. Signature of Rabbi Herzog, as well as the opening of the letter with three lines and corrections in his handwriting.

In his letter, the rabbi states that the idea of determining a fast is already an idea initiated by the Chief Rabbinate of Eretz Yisrael, but he disagrees with the day that the rabbis of Europe wanted to determine in 5 in Cheshvan, which is a late date, and he also disagrees with the day of the proclamation of the fast sought by the rabbis of Europe. The rabbis of Europe asked to set the day of the proclamation with the closing prayer of Yom Kippur in Neyila pray, and Rabbi Herzog argues in response that it is not appropriate to establish a fast on the day of Teshuvah, And seeks to offer the first day of Slichot - the 22nd of Elul for the day of fasting for the troubles of European Jewry.

Rabbi Yitzchak Isaac Halevi Herzog [1888-1959] The Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of Eretz Israel from 1936, and later of the State of Israel until his death. Prior to that he was the Chief Rabbi of Irish Jewry.
