MAUTHAUSEN 122.767 morts enregistres et des dizaines de milliers d'autres non immatricules - MAUTHAUSEN - 122.767 registered deaths and tens of thousands of others who were not registered - A large poster published on the 10th anniversary of the camp's liberation on May 5th, 1945. Published by Federation Internationale des resistants - The International Federation of Resistance Fighters, Vienna.

The poster displays nine historic photographs from the Mauthausen death camp - photographs from the time the camp was operated by the Nazis: nude prisoners during roll call, emaciated prisoners on the day of liberation, piles of corpses, the gallows, and photographs taken when the camp was liberated by Allied forces: Mauthausen camp prisoners cheering the entering Allied soldiers riding tanks - one of the most touching photographs from World War II period in general which shaped the visual collective memory of the Holocaust, the first memorial ceremony held in the camp, and more.

After the war, one survivor, Dr. Anthony Gaczynski, reported 62 ways that people were murdered in Gusen and Mauthausen camps. Hans Marsalek estimated that the average life expectancy of new inmates arriving at Auschwitz ranged from six months between 1940-1942 to less than three months in early 1945. Because the Germans destroyed many of the camp's documents and evidence, and often gave new arrivals the serial numbers of those already dead, the exact death toll at the Mauthausen-Gusen complex is not known for certain. Various estimates place the number between 122,767 to 320,000 (so the poster took the lower known figure), while other commonly cited numbers are 200,000 and "over 150,000", of whom approximately 38,000 were Jews.

Size: 60x85 cm. Light fold marks. Very good condition.
