A photograph of Moshe Sharett in a Turkish army uniform in Istanbul, 1917.
In 1913, after graduating from high school, Moshe Sharett went to Istanbul to study law. With the outbreak of World War I, he returned to Eretz Israel and became active in the Ottoman movement (which called on the Jews of the settlement to adopt Ottoman citizenship in order to prevent their deportation from the country). In 1916 he enlisted in the Turkish army, served as an interpreter, and completed his service with the rank of officer. The photograph before us was taken in those days while he was in Istanbul.
