”
Pray for the living, remember the dead” – A special Passover prayer booklet with an emotional appeal from the Chief Rabbi of Britain, Rabbi Joseph Hertz, to all Beit Israel, in the Passover of 1944, at the height of the massacres and killings in Europe – to remember the dead during the Seder night itself, and to pray for deliverance for the living after Eliyahu’s cup.
“Next Friday, the joy of Passover will enter every Jewish home. In recent years, celebrations have been diminishing due to the suffering of Israel in the lands of the Nazis. The Jewry of Europe has shrunk to worse than Egyptian enslavement, and we are filled with anxiety over the few who survived torture and slaughter, it is our holy duty to remember them on our festival of freedom, as well as to remember joyously the millions of our brothers, flesh of our flesh and blood, who were condemned to a horrific death by order of the satanic tyrant”. And requests from every household of Israel in England the plea “for our brothers who remain alive in the Nazi lands”, and a memorial prayer for the victims of the mass slaughter. And expresses the hope that: “May the coming Passover bring liberation from terror and oppression to our injured brothers…”
Inside the booklet is printed: “יהי רצון שנשמע ונתבשר בשורות טובות”, Aheinu Kol Beit Israel, and the prayer El Male Rachamim. Hebrew and English page by page.
