The photo shows a Jewish shopkeeper in Berlin sweeping broken glass from the front of his shop. After cleaning up, he will have to pay "damages"". This photo appearing on the front page is one of the most iconic associated with Kristallnacht, appearing countless times over the years in publications about Nazi damage to Jewish shops. The article next to the image reports Jewish children expelled from their homes in the Nazi disturbance, adding that "Jewish doctors were arrested everywhere, leaving patients without medical care. Homes and synagogues were burned and destroyed. Shops were wrecked, restaurants forbidden to serve Jews. In Stuttgart, during the riots Jews were led by the masses and put into police cars. In Breslau, military engineers dynamically surrounded a synagogue in such a way that it collapsed on a nearby Jewish school. On the outskirts of Berlin, Jewish children were expelled from Jewish orphanages, after which the houses were demolished. At no time did the fire brigade or police intervene, except to save Aryan property. Hundreds of thousands of Jews disappeared from every town of any size. Today, the total number of arrests throughout the Reich is estimated at 50,000...". It is also reported that a Jewish couple poisoned themselves and their children in order to escape the Nazi pogroms, and that along the Dutch-German border hundreds of Jews tried to flee Germany. The German guards allowed them through, but Dutch officials turned them back waiting for new orders from The Hague. "Many of the refugees have been living in forests near the border for several days".
