Letter of the verdict in the matter of the foreign wigs for women, arriving in Israel from India, in the handwriting and signature of Rabbi Moshe Sternbuch. [2004].
In his letter, which was published in the midst of the affair that agitated the ultra-orthodox and religious public in Israel in 2004, which was discussed by the great rabbis in Israel and around the world, after it was discovered that many wigs sold in Israel were used to worship idolatry in India. The Gaon goes on to explain his reasons for banning even wigs that are doubted to have come from India for various reasons and lays down his ruling in practice: "And in fact we rule when there is a concern about certain wig with Indian hair such as from Korea or various types from Europe and it is impossible to find out for sure that it is not from India (even the Haredi sellers do not believe at all) and there is a doubt, the mitzvah is to remove it from the house ...".
Rabbi Sternbuch's opinion to prohibit also if there is a doubt, joined the opinion of the great poskim who discussed the question at the time, led by Rabbi Eliashiv, who ruled to prohibit, and thousands of ultra-Orthodox women completely stopped wearing any type of wig, as long as the exact source of the hair from which the wig was made was not ascertained.
