Travel book that was published following an 1842 trip by artist and engraver William Henry Bartlett to Jerusalem. Includes 25 parchment paper protected engraved plates and an illustrated print on the title page, as well as dozens of illustrations within the text. The print plates include maps of the city (double plates), the Western Wall, the Pool of Shiloah and Mount Zion. Early descriptions of Jerusalem as well as travels to the Dead Sea, Bethlehem, Hebron and other biblical sites. Next to the title page is an engraving of Jerusalem and the Temple during the Second Temple period.
William Henry Bartlett (1809-1854) was an engraver who specialized in romantic and realistic landscape paintings. His works included engravings of the Near East and North America.

VIII, [2], 255, [17] + [25] engraved plates, 24.5 cm. Original cover with gilt decorations. A black stain follows at the top of about 40 pages in the middle of the book above the page frame without damage to text (partly restored with glued paper).
