An impressive interior photograph of the Ark, the decorated walls, and the seats in the Great Synagogue in Rome. Early 20th century.
The Great Synagogue of Rome is the largest and most magnificent of the synagogues in the city. It was built on the site of the former synagogue building that served the Jews of Rome until 1893. It had five synagogues for each of the congregation of the city. The old structure was badly damaged in a fire that broke out in it. Remnants of the synagogue, including the ark, are in the new synagogue that inaugurated in 1904.
