dziecieca karta zywnosciowa - Baby food card, ink-stamp dated November 10, 1941, Lodz ghetto. Polish with handwritten fill.

Food stamps of this type, which were intended for babies in the ghetto, were distributed monthly. The baby of a Jew who for some reason could not obtain a ticket was in immediate danger of death. From 'Testimony of a Boy' by Sara Ziskind [Hakibbutz Hameuchad 1986]: 'Four months have not yet passed since we arrived in the Lodz Ghetto. But it seemed to us that time went on indefinitely. The main cause was hunger. Expecting a month to distribute the "rations" (food stamps), watching for a long week for the bread distribution day, and the crawling hours until the distribution of soup extended the days ... When Father returned from work his face was whitish. With clenched fists, he spoke about the speech of Rumkowski, the head of the Judenrat, at Baluty Square. The old bastard tried - albeit weeping - to persuade parents to give their children sacrifice, what do they mean by sacrifice? What do you want to do with the children? We'd better be a victim of children. What does he understand, the man without the children, what are the children ... '.

Of the food stamps that survived from the Lodz ghetto, tickets of this kind are rare.

15x14 cm. Very fine condition.
