Deutsches Reich Reisepass - German passport No. 37712 which was issued for a Jewish woman named Emma Sarah - (the name added by the Nazis to all Jewish women's passports) Reincourt, on October 5, 1938. The woman was born in Vienna, 1900. The passport was valid until August 14, 1939. Emma left Vienna on a ship to New York in transit through Italy, on October 27, 1939.

In March 1938, Austria was annexed to Germany (the "Anschluss"). Following the annexation, about 200,000 Jews were added to the Reich, who were also subject to the Nuremberg Laws. The German Ministry for Jewish Affairs, headed by Adolf Eichmann, was responsible for enforcing the laws against the Jews and their deportation from Austria. The Jews were dispossessed of their property and forced to emigrate outside of German territory or even outside of territories under German control, in accordance with the Nazis' decision. The confiscated money was used to finance their deportation, and the balance went to the German treasury. In March 1938, the Germans required all owners of Austrian passports to sign them with the letter 'J' and it was stipulated that the name "Sarah" would be added to the first name of every Jewish woman, and the name "Israel" would be added to every first name of a Jew. The passport before us was signed about six months after the installation was established.
